Caldecott and the Common Core
The year 2013 marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Randolph Caldecott Medal, awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. In the 12 months leading up to the celebrations that are planned for ALA's Annual Conference in June, we're running a series of articles across Booklist's publications to honor the medalists throughout the decades. For this art-focused issue of Quick Tips, we celebrate the picture book as an art form, with Common Core–linked suggestions for sharing Caldecott winners with students. You'll also find, as part of this issue's celebration of the arts, an interview with acclaimed author and arts education advocate Jan Greenberg. Pop-up books are an art form all their own, and in our end-of-year roundup, we've reviewed recent examples of well-crafted 3-D titles for young and old alike. And for those of you who missed our latest "Unpacking the Standard" column in Booklist, we're running an expanded version here, with additional ideas for tying science books to the standards throughout grade levels. As always, we welcome your news and suggestions. Which curricular topics or Common Core questions would you like to see covered in upcoming issues? Let us know!
Happy reading!

The award-winning author discusses writing about art for a young audience and the importance of arts education.
Jan Greenberg has created a long list of acclaimed titles that introduce contemporary art to young readers. Often working with her frequent collaborator Sandra Jordan, she has explored ways of looking at art, as in The Painter's Eye (1991), and presented the lives of individual artists, such as Romare Bearden, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, Louise Bourgeois, and Jackson Pollock; in books that are rich minimuseums of images and insights, complete with glossaries of art terms, time lines, and bibliographies. Here, Greenberg talks about her passion for art and education and the process of translating that passion into print for young readers.

In this "Caldecott in the Classroom" article, celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the medal, we focus on the picture book as an artistic whole, in which text and illustrations, covers and endpapers, and details of the design work together to provide an aesthetically pleasing and satisfying reading experience for children. Encouraging children to examine the components of a book ties in neatly with the Common Core State Standards, and, below, you'll find suggested activities that prompt children's aesthetic responses while linking to individual standards.

It's an exciting time for children's nonfiction, as evidenced by the recent publication of so many new, rich informational texts that beg to be questioned, analyzed, and further investigated. Luckily, the Common Core State Standards guide students and teachers to do just that. Below are suggestions for connecting recent science titles with CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.5–6.5. You'll find an expanded version of this article posted on our new Common Core resources home page.
